Chat Control
FIGHTING UNPRECEDENTED SURVEILLANCE
THREATENING OUR PRIVACY
ONLINE, EVERYWHERE
On the 11 May 2022 the EU commission made a proposal for a regulation laying down rules to prevent and combat child sexual abuse. The proposal has been discussed controversially under the term “chatcontrol“ ever since. I have made my point clear from the beginning that I view the chatcontrol as an inacceptable, disproportionate, and ineffective mean to effectively protect children. Child sexual abuse and the distribution of the child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is a social problem that cannot be solved by throwing technology at it. This opinion is backed by many experts we invited to the public hearing of the digital committee on chat control on the 01.03.2023. From public prosecutor to scientist, from Chaos Computer Club to children’s rights organization, they all agree in their statements: The proposed regulation is the wrong path.
